Andy Sullivan (Head Coach)
Bio:
I started playing hockey in Peoria, Il, when I was seven years old and
played Youth Hockey, High School Hockey, College Intramurals, and men's
rec league until I was 22. I started again at age 32 and have played
intramurals and men's rec until this year at 46, when I retired. Except for
Pond Hockey which is my true love and I hope to play until I die.
My first coaching gig was the Van Cleve Pee Wees of 1981. Seven years
ago my Pond Hockey friend Jen Voichick told me she thought I should
coach and that I should coach girls, I think she meant Youth Hockey, but
a year later Pat Blair (another pond player and at that time a B team
coach) asked me to help coach the Women's C team and I've been at it now
for 6 years. I have found it to be a rewarding and enriching
experience.
TJ Matzen (Assistant Coach)
Bio:
I've been playing hockey since I was in fourth grade with four years of high school varsity experience. I also was coached in dryland techniques and drills by Dave Cruikshank, the husband of gold medalist speedskater Bonnie Blair. This will be my second year coaching the C team. I enjoy coaching with Andy and I think we work well together. This year I am enrolled in the school's power skating class, which should prove adventageous for putting some of the things taught to me in that class to use with the girls. I enjoy coaching the team very much and it's a great bunch of girls.
Jerry Miller (Goalie Coach)
Bio:
I've been playing hockey since the age of four, when I learned to skate on
outdoor ice. By the time I was a mite I was very interested in playing
goalie, but my coach told me we already had one. My two older brothers
would shoot tennis balls at me in our basement as I waited for my chance to
play between the pipes. Then one game our regular goalie forgot his
protective cup, and was hit right where it hurts during warmups. Within
minutes the goal pads were on me and the rest was history. From that game
on I was our goalie, and the teammate I replaced in net became one of our
top scorers for many years to come. Meant to be I guess. My youth teams
went on to win two state championships and play in three other title games.
I was a four year starter in high school, and turned down my only offer to
play college hockey at division three Lawrence University in Appleton. I
did play for the Austin Americans, an amateur all-star team, while attending
the University of Texas at Austin. I participated in a 1993 Mexico City
tournament, which was the first amateur hockey tournament featuring teams
from Mexico, the United States, and Canada. We finished in second place
that year, then returned in 1995 to win the championship. I continue to
play in an adult league here in Madison, and of course enjoy coaching the
goalies and helping out with the other players for the UW Women's "C" club
team.
